Half-size vs full-size plans: what to print for the jobsite and the office

Most Greater Boston projects print more full-size sets than they need and fewer half-size sets than they could use. Full size is the right call for the trailer table and the inspector; half size is the right call for almost everyone else. This guide explains what actually changes when a sheet is reduced, who needs which, and what the difference costs.

What half-size means

A half-size set is the same drawings printed at 50% of the issued sheet size. A 24 × 36 sheet becomes 12 × 18, which is printed on 11 × 17 paper with a small margin trimmed from the reduction, or on 18 × 24 paper with white space around it. A 30 × 42 sheet becomes 15 × 21 and fits 18 × 24 paper comfortably. Nothing is cropped: every note, dimension and detail is on the page, at half the size.

Scale is the only thing that changes

When a sheet is reduced by half, every scale on it is halved. A plan drawn at 1/4" = 1'-0" reads at 1/8" = 1'-0" on the half-size copy; a 1/2" detail reads at 1/4". The printed scale note in each title block is now wrong by exactly a factor of two, which is why half-size sets should carry a stamp or a cover note that says so. Good sets include a graphic scale bar on each sheet; the bar shrinks with the drawing and stays true, and it is the only scale you should trust on any reduced or plotted-to-fit sheet.

Who needs full size

• The permit file and the inspector. Boston Inspectional Services and the surrounding building departments review from the issued size; stamped sheets should be printed at the size they were stamped.
• The trailer or site table. Layout, framing and MEP coordination happen on paper that several people can read at once; a 1/8" plan of a house is hard to read from across a table.
• Detail-heavy sheets. Wall sections, stair details and structural schedules with 3/32" text are comfortable at full size and become 3/64" text at half size, which is readable but tiring on a windy site.
• Anything a sub will mark up and return. Red pen needs room.

Who is better off with half size

• The office: the estimator, the project manager and the person answering the phone. Half-size sets fit a binder and a desk.
• Bidding subs. Three half-size sets cost less than one full-size set and every trade can keep its own copy.
• Walkthroughs, punch lists and owner meetings. An 11 × 17 set folds in half and rides in a door pocket or a clipboard.
• Reference copies of superseded revisions. Keep the record; skip the full-size paper.

What the difference costs

The pattern that works for most residential and light-commercial jobs in Greater Boston: two full-size sets (site and permit or office master), then half-size copies for everyone else, ordered in the same upload so they arrive together. Getting a clean half-size print from the PDF

1. Send the issued PDF at its native page size. Do not export a reduced PDF from a viewer; reduction is done at print time so line weights are scaled correctly.
2. Keep the PDF vector. A rasterized or scanned set that is readable at full size turns soft at half size; a vector set stays crisp at any reduction.
3. Ask for the same sheet order and stapling as the full-size set so page references match across copies.
4. Mark the set as half size on the cover or with a stamp so nobody scales from it.
